Smiles and handmade lanterns lit up the streets of Shiregreen as around 100 members of the community took part in the popular annual lantern parade.

We worked closely with volunteers from Friends of Concord Park and Woolley Wood to provide the free event on Saturday 16 November.

Before the event, four community workshops were held with local colleges and nine schools where children were supported to make their own lanterns.

On the night, families set off from Shiregreen Community Centre with their lanterns and headed towards Concord Park.

At the park there was a spectacular light display by Techno-Spartans and free hot food for the community to enjoy.

The parade was supported by our Sustainable Communities Fund, which provides grants for community initiatives that make a difference to the lives of local residents.

Our partnerships manager, Ria Burns, said: “The build up to this event has been very exciting and we were so pleased to see so many from the community get together to enjoy the parade.”

Friends of Concord Park volunteer, Margaret Whelan, added: “As volunteers, we love seeing families participating in making and joining in the parade with these lanterns.”

Dawn Dale, Garry Weatherall and Mark Rusling, Shiregreen and Brightside Councillors from the Northeast Local Area Committee at Sheffield City Council, were all at the event.

They commented: “The lantern parade is always one of the highlights of the Shiregreen year. It’s great to see the children so proud of their work and lighting up the dark nights. We’re delighted to support the event.”
