Thrifty resident Pat Vincent shares her saving tips

Thrifty resident Pat Vincent is encouraging others to follow her money saving tips.

Pat, 86, has many ways to reduce her winter bills and is keen to share her knowledge.

Pat said: “I read a lot and have a relative who’s a plumbing and heating engineer.

“Hopefully some Sanctuary residents can save money by following my advice.”

Pat spent 24 years as a care worker and lives in one of our multi-storey blocks near Chester city centre.

The retired carer is on her third three-year stint on the Chester and District Housing Committee.

Pat added: “I’ve been a tenant in Chester for 25 years and always like to be involved in the community.

“If you don’t get involved you don’t make a difference.”

Pat’s money saving tips:

  • Find out if you can turn down the temperature flow rate on your boiler.

  • See if you can install a boiler control which varies heat depending on the weather outside.

  • Find the water symbol on your boiler and reduce the temperature to what you find comfortable.

  • Bleeding your radiators twice a year keeps them efficient.

  • I find 19C warm enough. Dropping your thermostat setting by one degree used to save me £80 a year, now it’s around £400!

  • If you live alone or you’re on a low income, ask your water company if there’s any extra help they can give you.

  • Use the cold water which first comes from your hot tap to cook or water plants. Your water company may supply a device to cut your water use, to find out contact them directly.
